Hal Shepherd - Small Business Person of the Year
The Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce announced the winners of its Small Business Awards.
From dozens of finalists, the winners for the 24th annual nomination-based award were scheduled to be given out during a reception at WorkPlay May 8. With the theme "Small Business ROCKS!," it was held as a part of national Small Business Week.
The winners are:

- Small Business Person of the Year (1-9 employees): Deborah Lechner of ErgoScience Inc.
- Small Business Person of the Year (10-25 employees), Hal Shepherd of The Kennion Group Inc.
- Small Business Person(s) of the Year (26-75 employees): Geoff Clever, Neil Davis, Julee Potter of Davis Architects Inc.
- Small Business Person of the Year (76-500 employees): Dr. Bruce Irwin of American Family Care Inc.
- Small Business Advocate of the Year Award: Jairo Vargas, Latino News LLC.
- Jesse J. Lewis Jr. Community Service Award: Ken Jackson, Dudley C. Jackson Inc.
- Centennial Award: Commercial Printing Co. and J.H. Berry & Gilbert Inc.
- In the first year to honor nonprofits, the Nonprofit of the Year Award went to United Way of Central Alabama Inc.
