The Bottom Line: Ed Thomason On Health Care
This week’s question:
What are lingering issues the Great Recession has caused for Birmingham’s health care industry?

“The administrative costs of keeping up with new laws and regulations can be overwhelming. Local health care providers and businesses want to remain focused on clients, but are expending energy on overhead costs related to employment. Overall in a recession, more regulation makes it more difficult for business leaders to hire additional staff. Many ill unemployed individuals are forced to file for bankruptcy; this hurts Birmingham and the state of Alabama. Uncertainty is never good for business and the health care bill seems to be in flux as we speak. Right now we need to purge the unknown, so we can forge ahead with strategy.”
